Amanda Hensman is the lead Chiropractor and owner of Lifestyle Chiropractic. Having qualified as a Chiropractor in 2000, she has held a number of positions within several different places around the country in a bid to experience different techniques and styles of practise. "it was always my ultimate aim to set up clinic one day, and after five years of working within other clinics, I felt it was time". So having founded Lifestyle Chiropractic in 2005, Amanda has gone on to bring other Chiropractors and practitioners into the clinic to add to what is a vibrant and inviting clinic.

Mairi Dowlen (Doctor of Chiropractic) joined Lifestyle Chiropractic in July 2008. She qualified from AECC in 2004.

She says: My journey into chiropractic began in my 20s. Whilst studying a BSc in Biomedical Sciences at Aberdeen University I decided to complete a Massage Diploma to experience a therapeutic application for the physiology, biochemistry and anatomy that I was studying on such a molecular level. Through this I realized that I loved working with people and touch and began to observe professionals around Aberdeen to discover how I could best use my degree towards a hands on holistic profession. I was introduced to Chiropractic through this investigation. I vividly remember observing one chiropractor, in this session he tested the arm strength of a lady that was obviously weak, he then adjusted an area and re tested the same muscle, which now appeared strong. To me this was incredible and brought up so many questions in relation to my degree at the time, how had this happened? what had he done that had caused such a significant change in her strength?. My mind was hooked. I graduated from Aberdeen and went straight into the Chiropractic BSc and MSc with the Anglo European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth, graduating in 2004.

Since 2004 I have worked as a full time chiropractor in Cornwall and now in Devon. Since graduating and working with people I finally began to get regular care myself. Although I understood chiropractic I had never really let myself be helped by it. I had suffered with migraines and headaches since I was 3 years old and throughout my life I had taken medication from everyday painkillers to hormone balancers to beta-blockers and more. I also suffered with low back pains and like the headaches my symptoms were getting worse and more frequent. I was firmly stuck in a sickness paradigm and believed that I needed the medication to survive my own body. It took my own study, re-education, re-thinking, regular chiropractic care, trust, support and continual lifestyle choices to change and evolve this lifelong belief.

Chiropractic continues to inspire me and give me the tools to actively change and support my own health and lifestyle choices. For me chiropractic adjustments will always play a vital role in supporting the body to express better function and wellness. When combined with simple exercises, good nutrition and the awareness to think differently a different level of health becomes possible and sustainable.

I continually strive to provide excellent chiropractic care and appropriate lifestyle support to help anyone wishing to improve his or her own health and wellbeing. I have attended many postgraduate courses and seminars in adult, pregnancy, pediatrics, cranial and emotional techniques to continually learn from and for every individual that I see.

I am passionate about supporting each and every person that I see and actively aim to provide them with the understanding and confidence to make their own choices, easily and enjoyably so that they are empowered to make a lasting difference to their health and wellbeing.

I am incredibly grateful to work with so many different individuals and families in such a dynamic holistic profession. Together with the team at County Chiropractic, I look forward to being a part of your choice for health

Gareth Owen

He grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa and always wanted to help people. He initially started work as an emergency technician working towards qualifying as a paramedic though he found that this appeared not to have a lasting effect for people. An opportunity then arose to work as an axiallary obstetrics theatre nurse and as part of an emergency childbirth response team where he assisted in the delivery of many babies. It was through this he was offered a scholarship to study medicine and moved to the United Kingdom in 2002. Unfortunately the exchange rate and living cost of Cambridge were more than he could afford and so he continued to work.

He then worked in medical research for several years and had the pleasure of working with many different practitioners. During this time Chiropractors had a profound influence on him; firstly in that they appeared to have an actual effect on people lives not just helping them out of pain but into a better, more fulfilling life and secondly that they all appeared to love what they did.

In 2009 he decided to leave research and train to be a Chiropractor at The Anglo European College of Chiropractic. During this he also qualified as Certified Hypnotherapist and also completed specialist training in childbirth hypnotherapy. He completed the Masters in Chiropractic in 2014.

Gareth says: “I have a passion for helping people get the most out of life so when I met Amanda and Mairi, their similar views and passion really appealed to me and I am glad to now be a part of the team at Lifestyle.”

Gareth is also a keen sports enthusiast having played cricket, hockey and athletcis at national level. In addition he is also a qualified coach in archery, fencing, mountain climbing, cycling and surfing.

He found "Chiropractic allowed more than just to be pain free, it also allowed engagement in 'super tuning' for sports."
